Some weeks ago we were shocked at the gruesome rape of an Indian student in India. In fact she was raped about 6 times then thrown off the bus she was travelling in, She died later. The sensational story hit the international news media and all went to town on the story.
A male teenager was interviewed and at one point in the discussion he stated that it was not such an issue because South Africa is the Rape country of the world. South Africa is indeed the international rape country because it does have the highest rape figures in the world. In a research article on the internet it was stated that South Africa does have the highest rape rate and that is largely due to the incompetence and inability of the government and a lack of motivation in order to do something about the crime level. Further, per capita South Africa does have the highest crime rate in the world.
It is worthwhile to look at the crime rate and statistics of the United States: in 2006 7million people were behind bars: On probation or on parole of which 2 million were incarcerated. The USA has 5 % of the world population and 25% of the world’s incarcerated population. In 2008 90,000 persons reported being raped. In 2005 191,670 victims or rape or sexual assault was reported.
Use of drugs and alcohol frequently plays a part in rape. In rapes where neither the victim nor perpetrator had been drinking accounts for 29% of all rapes. 15 – 20% of all women in the USA have been raped at least once in their lifetime.
Gun ownership in the US are 89 guns for every hundred Americans compared to 6 in England and Wales. USA in 2011 - 12,664 murders and 8,583 were by firearms. (Britain 550 murders in 2011) In America gun crime is going down and decreasing faster than other forms of crime.
Murder weapons 2011 California had the highest number of gun murders that year: - 1790. Which is 68% of all murders that year and equivalent to 3,25 per 100,000 people in that state. Knives and cutting instruments – 13% Others 9%, personal weapons 6%, Blunt objects 4% Total murders 12664. While gun crime is down in the vast majority of states, it is up in Indiana.
The act and concept of holding schools, scholars, students and staff to ransom seems to be expanding over a large section of the world: Incident like this have occurred in many countries From China, several states in the Soviet Union( defunct) and of course the United States which has the greatest prevalence for that type of crime. To date there does not seem to be any reasonable explanation for these attacks but there are pointers to mental disabilities which may be the root cause.
