Would you let your mom read your comments?

25 August 2012, 07:10
A lot has been said on these forums about people hiding behind nicks thinking they're empowered to say whatever they want, but there's an increasing trend of not just the random once-offs stumbling on, cursing a bit, and then disappearing forever.

Instead, we're seeing people being persistently aggressive, and deliberately insulting.

What I can't help thinking is that we should all be playing the ball and not the man, but that's not happening here. People deliberately come online with an axe to grind, and I can't help noticing that the people with the worst comments are the ones you never see posting articles themselves. Right next to the 'Comments policy' and 'Report comment' links, we have numerous examples of the worst filth you could want.

I'm not the first person to note this. Just recently, there was this article: Then we had Bergie, who stirred up quite a reaction with this direct article against Thoughtsandstuff: Thoughts used to casually insult me as well, but I took the time to engage with her directly over a number of days. I believed that she believed her viewpoints, no matter how abrasive I found them to be, so I tried to play the issues there. It didn't work perfectly, but I tried.

For anybody who does take the time to read the Comments Policy, you'll find the following:12.2 Users undertake not to post content to the News24 web site that may be illegal, defamatory, infringing, harassing, obscene, commercial advertising, personal marketing, profane, untrue, incorrect or harmful and News24 reserves the right to remove such content in terms of clause 11 above.

Everybody here who thinks they aren't breaking that clause, raise your hands. I don't think I can, although I do try to engage everybody as far as possible. For my trouble, I've been treated with a few gems pesonally:

hannes.piek.5 - August 23, 2012 at 12:07Your approach is definately seriously flawed! Get a life.

logical.thinker.90 - August 13, 2012 at 19:12Can I have some of what you're having? What an idiot!

mark.steedman.9 - August 13, 2012 at 20:35Foxy, you have the lowest expectations i have ever heard of!!! Idiot!!

riaan.mostert.58 - August 13, 2012 at 21:26And the prize for the most ignorant, selfish and oblivious fool goes to *drum roll* Foxy

Thoughtsandstuff - August 16, 2012 at 15:32Sorry, but you've already shown yourself to be a sexist pig through your comments, so why bother?

JannieJammerGat - August 23, 2012 at 21:28Foxy, you and your kind are what is wrong in this world. Really, to think the way you do, you must have some sort of mental disease.

Charms - August 24, 2012 at 14:27You are totally foxed!!! Like I have said before, are you sure you are an adult, you sound more like a 12 year old child that has no concept of real life!!

Bloodbane - August 24, 2012 at 13:52IF you bothered to actually check any facts you'd find I'm right, but you are too utterly stupid and pigheaded so it's not surprising that you take the criminals side in everything. Every time you type you show how stupid you are, please try make an effort next time

Would these commenters speak to people they disagree with in real life like this? Why do words like 'idiot', 'moron' and 'fool' flow off people's tongues so fluidly here?

EVEN if you feel that the person IS an idiot, they took the time to post whatever got you so riled up, so the least you can do is respond to it, or if you don't want to, just ignore it. Taking the time to not engage with them but rather just insult them is completely counter-intuitive. What are you here for, if not to engage with different viewpoints?
