So. Most of the News24 regulars know that I've been in the process of moving to the first world. I can't say that it was a move that was without trepidation. I worried about it. A lot.
But there's one thing I can say without question:
It's the right move.
If you want to live somewhere where you are safe walking down the street, leave South Africa.
If you want to stand or fall on your skills and your hard work, then leave South Africa.
If you want to have opportunity, regardless of the colour of your skin, or your political affiliations, leave South Africa.
We haven't been here long, but so far, aside from missing the family and friends we've left behind, there's not one thing that I can say is better in SA. Yes, it's summer, and winter IS coming at some point - but I think I might like skiing!
South Africa will always be home. It's where my roots are.
However, if you want to have a future that isn't about fighting, arguing about stupid things like race, or dealing with a government that hates and fails everyone equally, then you have to make the move.
The simple fact is, the grass IS greener. And there's no dirt obscuring the view, and you can go outside and experience that green grass without being afraid.
To everyone who encouraged me in this move, THANK YOU. To everyone else - jealousy DOES make you nasty.
