So am I on many occasions and in many ways. Many of those ways I do not wish to share right now, but I will at some stage.
I have to keep reminding myself to read something twice before commenting, I have to remind myself not to write stuff after having too much to drink and then actually push the "publish" button in a stupor, and only realise later what I did and that they actually published that crap (the horror!).
I never use the word "cunt", even when I'm drunk when speaking to people. I might be a bit more argumentative (depending on the situation) and rile people up but even after a blackout I would apparently be hugging the opposition and gentlemanly in my manner of dealing with them. For some reason, when I was drunk, I just let loose and the constraints I have normally did not apply after having written it instead of having spoken it. I find that pretty interesting.
Anyway, there it is, on a public forum, where I'm writing some rant in a stupor and used the word "cunt". I have to say though, that particular night I drank enough to fell three elephants, so I was secretly proud of my typing skills and my somewhat out of the box thought patterns – if only I left out that horrible word perhaps it would have been received better.
So, I digress, my apologies (for digressing and for that article with the abomination of a word that was actually published).
Suckers. You and me. We all are. None of us want to believe we're suckers because it makes us angry and we feel the need to retort when we start feeling like suckers. Most people react politely at first, eventually after quite a few comments perhaps not so polite as they started out.
Is it due to frustration? A feeling of not being heard or understood?
No – what a lame excuse. Reacting like that is selfish, because you've not read what the other person has tried to say, or seriously considered what they said, and instead want to push your point across. Yes I'm guilty of that on many occassions but not on all occassions – often I've stopped myself and tried to understand what they're saying, and asked honest questions, only to be ignored – people don't want honest questions unless those questions suit the answers they know they can give, and mostly never own up to the fact that the question is relevant, and that they don't personally know the answer.
Hence the eternal factions in comments here on N24.
Blacks versus whites.
Religious versus Atheists.
It's a great seller for N24, because people are constantly fighting about those things. I've read some pretty positive article where people have come in and slammed it, with nothing to back it up and no reason to be so negative. Naturally, people go on the defensive. Articles that "naturally" offend are a great money spinner for N24 because it keeps people refreshing their web browsers and keeps them commenting, and keeps paying for the "free" news we get to read about.
One thing I will give N24 a great thumbs up for – is that they don't care what you write. Once you push the publish button it's their perogative to publish it or not. It's public domain, so they're not liable for public opinions. It's clever. This is not a newspaper, or a magazine where they rely on you to buy a physical product, this is the beast you created, this is the beast they profit from.
So, who are the suckers?
The ones that take offense!
The ones who take offense are the ones who make money for the likes of N24. Regardless, if you hold a staunch belief in something, be very sure that you have your facts together because whatever you say here will certainly meet with some great minds who will tell you otherwise. If you take offense without putting yourself in their shoes you can be pretty sure of a good lambasting. If you write rubbish (like I did) and they actually publish it, own up and be honest about it and accept your deserved humiliation, and hope you can redeem yourself by writing something a little more intelligent like I'm trying to do now. It doesn't mean it will help – but at the very least one can appeal to the fallible human that is prevalent in all of us.
So, henceforth, excuse my possible future public indiscretions that N24 rightfully publish until I learn my lesson – allow me to learn it in my own time please.
Because we're all suckers at the end of the day - for something.
** P.S. No spell checker was used when writing this, and yes I've had two glasses of wine which I thoroughly enjoyed.
