You like my house? I printed it myself! Come on in and see!

13 May 2014, 13:34
I came across an interesting article a few days ago regarding future jobs. One that caught my attention is called Re-wilder and is defined as a professional whose role is to undo environmental damage caused by people, factories, cars, etc. Their responsibilities will entail ripping off infrastructure such as roads and old factories and establishing new forests. (A farmer in disguise?)
Another futuristic job called Tele-surgeon, I believe this one is already in existence, is all about doctors operating on patients that are miles by making use of robotics and telecoms. The Internet does literally save lives.
Well the demand for doctors will continue to grow as the global population does. It’s the actual curriculum that will significantly change as operating rooms are overhauled in favour of technology and assistants become robots. Doctors will have to know more than just medicine. I’m talking computer science.
This shift is inevitable and parents need to take this into consideration when advising their children on possible career paths.
Another article about a Chinese company that “printed” 10 one-storey houses in one day by making use of four 3D printers serves as a sign that the current trades are starting to belong in a museum, together with the steam engines.
I can’t help but wonder what will happen to the unskilled labourers when even the skilled cannot apply their skills anymore. And the scary part is that most of us are still oblivious. Yes, robots will be taking over soon. Wait, a 3D printer is a robot.
If I had a child I would make sure that I guide him to become the one thing that will be required to ensure the proper functioning of these robots: a computer scientist, a programmer.
Well, this article is not about me. It’s about the millions of people that are unemployed and the other millions that matriculated yet cannot make sense of this article.
What will become of them when the world starts using robots as gardeners? When we start printing our houses, food, clothes? When we no longer need the delivery guy because a drone is more reliable? Even truck drivers are not safe since self-driven cars are quickly becoming a reality.
The relief is that this might not happen in our lifetime, or will it?
I think it’s time that South Africa looked at education a bit differently.
You may be well educated and think you might not be affected by this eminent shift. Think again. As unemployment grows the unemployed will be dependant on you for survival, either through taxes or through the barrel of a gun.Well, time for my training bootcamp. I love programming and can’t miss it for anything in this world. I have always wanted to invent something, but I got a chance to reinvent myself instead!
