What I’ve learned so far:
I’ve learned that you need to learn how to eat chilli.
You need to learn how to cook it too.
You must never eat a pie in the car on your way to work or an interview if you’re wearing black.
I’ve learned to buy the temp or new person lunch (because chances are they haven’t worked in a while and can’t afford to buy/pack lunch).
I’ve learned never to try and settle an argument after 02h00 in the morning. It will only end badly.
I’ve learned that laughter defuses the most difficult situation.
I’ve learned that I prefer being clown to being a martyr (yes, I’ve done both and speak with authority on this one).
I’ve learned that losing someone is like f@cking up your knee in a car accident. The pain will ease up with lots of time. But, every now and again, especially on cold and rainy nights, it will hurt just as much as the day it happened.
I’ve learned to be kind to animals but not to approach strange dogs unless they show an interest in you.
I’ve learned that High School is NOT Your glory days.
I’ve learned that love is scarce.
You need to pay attention to the people fixing your fridge/washing machine. They will either rip you off or you might learn a thing or two.
I’ve learned that bosses don’t admit that they’re wrong. Ever. Not fair. Deal with it.
I’ve learned that money comes and goes and it you spend your life chasing that, you will have an empty and hollow heart at the end of the day. Find what makes you happy, and if you’re honest about it, it won’t be cash.
I’ve learned to eat ice cream in cold weather.
You’re never too old to learn to play guitar.
I’ve learned that Cape Town and Johannesburg are like two different countries with two different languages.
I’ve learned that although Johannesburg has a reputation of being badass the people there rock. I miss you guys!
Capetonians are a lot more healthy though.
I’ve learned that everyone should waiter, at least once in their lives.
I’ve learned that people will use other people. Be aware of the fact but never let it stop you from doing something kind for someone.
Don’t expect to be rewarded for good deeds. It renders them moot. Do it simply because it’s the right thing to do.
I’ve learned not waste people’s time and not to let people waste mine. Time is precious and you’ll be surprised how short life is (even though it’s the longest thing you’ll ever do).
I’ve learned that entering the dating scene in your 30’s is not easy and that I should probably stick to getting another cat. You know that thing where they say you’re more likely to die in a plane crash than to hit love after 30? It’s probably true.
That being said I’ve learned that it’s okay to be by yourself
Always pay your share and don’t half-heartedly offer. It’s very transparent.
Don’t smoke other people’s cigarettes! (Reminds me, I’ve learned that I must stop smoking)
Learn to drink whiskey and beer. (They’re actually awesome)
Don’t be mean to car guards. Everyone just wants to feed their family. You know how you’ll always say I’ll do anything to feed my family? Maybe that is their last and only hope to do just that.
Do not be sarcastic with the people you love. It hurts and is unnecessary.
Listen to ACDC. They rock.
And lastly, I’ve learned that you should spend some time with old people. Their stories will amaze you and your company will mean more to them than you can possible imagine.
