You people disgust me!

17 March 2014, 17:22
This is a response to the comments I read on Malini Mohana's blog about how the middle class have no right to despise poor people for being poor.
More accurately, its a response to the many commentators who believe that poor people are poor because they cannot bother to improve their futures. Ergo, their distress is their fault, and you owe them no understanding and no Compassion.
I work with a team of qualified intensive care nurses at a private hospital. A bed in our intensive care unit costs around R13,000 per day. That excludes any treatment costs.
Most of our patients are middle class people like you. People who have lived the good life. And just like the poor people you despise for not bothering to get off their asses to rescue themselves from Poverty, our patients, people like you, with big bellies, and hardened arteries, and high blood pressures, and high blood sugar levels, liver falure, renal failure, or lifestyle-induced cancers, have not bothered to look after their health and well-being.
So they land up in our intensive care unit because they have had a stroke, or heart failure, or respiratory failure, or some critical condition caused by a slack, middle class lifestyle.
We nurses care for them. We ventilate their lungs when they cannot breathe. We jump onto their chests when their hearts stop and carefully administer adrenaline and other life-saving drugs at rates of 2-10 millilitres an hour, depending on how their hearts respond. We feed them intravenously, or through tubes into their stomachs. We turn them and rub their backs every 4 hours. We wash them, clean their backsides and change their sheets everytime they shit (not an easy job if a patient weighs more than 80kg and is unconscious!)
Now tell me, all you self-satisfied middle-class people who believe that poor people don't deserve compassion because they chose a lifestyle of Poverty, why should we nurses have any compassion for your plight after you have happily chose to abuse your bodies for years?
Why should I be kind to you, and rescue you from your self-induced state of suffering if you believe that that poor people deserve their suffering because it is self-induced?
Have you any right to expect compassion from me, or anyone, when you are on the edge of death because of lifestyle-inflicted illness, while you arrogantly condemn others to poverty because of the "lifestyle choices they made"?
I ask this question because I have huge amounts of Compassion for my patients. And their families. I also have huge compassion for poor people, and help where I can.
I ask this question because I wonder if my Compassion is misplaced.
If you, the self-satisfied middle class people, who are busy poisoning your bodies with wealthy lifestyles, believe that the poor deserve their lot because its their choice, why should I bother to care for you when your lifestyle of choice starts playing havoc with your body?
