This is a thing I often say. I know it sounds rude, but I like being honest. Don’t tell me you love music and Miss Miley is your favourite, I will insult you. Use your brain.
The pop artist with all their antics taking up all this space in the music industry is sickening. Sure she can sing, is that it? What else do you have to offer? That’s just the problem with the pop stars these say days (or has it always been like this?) They fill the radio airways, TV- and PC screens with their antics and gain popularity in that way. But ask yourself the question, do they deserve it? My opinion, no. The true musicians deserve the attention.
How do you as a person who likes music establish if an artist is good enough for you?
What is your standard when buying an album or renouncing someone is your favourite artist?
Definition of musician by wiki:
A musician (or instrumentalist) is a person who plays a musical instrument, especially (although not necessarily) as a profession - or one who is talented in making music or performing music creatively, or one who composes, conducts, or performs music (particularly instrumental music).
Musicians can specialize in any musical style, and some musicians play in a variety of different styles. Examples of a musician's possible skills include conducting, singing, composing, arranging, and the orchestration of music.
My personal standards are high, so should everybody’s be in this saturated market. A musician should write their own music. Examples of this is Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, Bryan Adams, Leonard Cohan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Chris De Burgh, Eros Ramazzotti, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, fokofpolisiekar, Koos Du Plessis, Valiant Swart, Piet Botha, Koos Kombuis, Adele, David Grey, PJ Harvey, Elton John, Robbie Williams, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Joan Baez, Frank Black(pixies), Fergie, Woody Guthrey, Norah Jones, Billy Joel, Chris Isaak, Alicia Keys, Amy Lee(Evanesence), Madonna, David Bowie and Sting. This is just a few of the many out there.
I do not necessarily listen to all of these artists, but I do have respect for their music and work. If you don’t know some of the musicians mentioned take a few minutes and listen to some of them.
I also believe that a singer-songwriter should play an instrument; this usually binds a song better for me. The artist is in full control of what they want to put out there and the entire song is an expression of what they felt when they wrote it. Fiona Apple is one of my most favourite artists and does this exceptionally well.
She pauses, as if to say, listen up, bangs on the piano to try and make an important point. She is a singer-songwriter-pianist. And the one can’t be without the other or it will not have the impact it needs.
What else can make an artist worthy enough to buy their album? To me, say something that matters or that I can resonate with. Example,
‘I ain't lookin' to compete with you
Beat or cheat or mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy or crucify you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you.’
Bob Dylan – All I really want to do.
This rings true to me, this song explains how I want my husband to treat me and I treat him. I can’t listen to this song enough and it never gets old.
That brings me to my next point. How many CD’s do you have that you haven’t listen to in years? Those albums are not timeless, and not worth what you paid for them. This is difficult to know before you buy it, but if it checks the other points it has a good chance of surviving the years to come.
