Look let’s face, it the female condom hasn’t really received as much popularity as the male condom.
In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, 60% of adult males are HIV-positive; the female condom is available for only one in every 300 women. Shocking stats isn’t it?
It was in total dismay and shock that it was made public that a vaginal gel, that took something like ten years to formulate, could possibly be available to the public in the not so distant future.
Genuinely, this was exciting news. However this was very short lived after the news reporter had stated that this gel will reduce infection by 54%, what happens to the 46%? However, this is the least of my concern.
The method behind its usage is a breath of fresh air to an “HIV aware/alert” no even better, an "educated" mind (who's the fight mainly against though?). It’s actually quite simple, use it before and after sex and in conjunction with a condom, its effectiveness will be maximised.
The concern I have is not with this innovation, it’s the perception this “gel” will create amongst people. I fear that it will create an impression that it can be used as an HIV deterrent by the man on the street.
World, local leaders, HIV activists need to seriously intensify the fight against Aids by coming up with more practical means of fighting this global issue. Spend less time (however, don’t ignore) on global summits trying to fight the inevitable and rather channel your resources towards finding a cure for this deadly virus. Yes I know they are trying. I just think there’s plenty room for more effort to be put in.
Stop with these dangerous public statements, by that I refer to “showers after unprotected sex”, gels that can be applied to vaginas, to name but a few.
Put yourself in the mind and shoes of the average man on the street and what this translates to in his not so informed mind. Perhaps the fight could possibly be narrowed down and make more sense to people.
Conduct thorough research first, weigh the pros and cons before you pop the cork!
