Gauteng toll roads 'cost a lot'

30 October 2011, 10:00  - Angus

An article in the iWeek magazine slams the DA and business in general for the way in which the tolling of Gauteng's freeways has been done has been highlighted by them.

SANRAL says that transport companies can claim the full toll fee amount back from Sars with VAT!

Wow, so now that we know for sure that ONLY the average poor working citizen will alone carry the entire burden of this behemoth should make us feel better?

We have been subject to almost five years of continuous construction on all our roads around Gauteng and the cost to the consumer has been vast.

SANRAL did not do this project in phases and thus caused massive congestion on ALL roads around Gauteng for five solid years, and are still nowhere near finished in many parts!

The cost of the massive delays daily to motorists, the huge pollution to our already toxic environment in Gauteng, the damage to our vehicles due to the outright dangerous "condition" of the roads and that WE carry the cost of damage via gravel, stones, rocks, uneven surfaces, accidents and the loss of many lives due to the shocking safety aspect of detours.

My point is this. If we have managed to survive five years of complete incompetence by SANRAL and its contractors where similar jobs could be completed in a third of the time in overseas countries and also the fact that SA taxpayers paid more than double what we should have paid for this "project" according to a recently published article in the papers, we were actually better off BEFORE the improvements.

The roads problem should have been tackled in such a way:

1. Public transport should have been jacked up to be as efficient as it was prior to '94. You could get a bus to almost anywhere and the cost was low. Now we have REA VAYA and others yet the strikes and incompetence have ensured SA just goes backwards.

2. Vehicles older than say 18 years should be removed and crushed unless a special permit is obtained showing the vehicle is in perfect roadworthy condition!

If just these two points were addressed properly, there   would be far more people taking public transport and thus far less cars on the road.

Bottom line is that the ANC (like Obama) think you spend your way out of trouble and with the massive capex costs incurred so far, future generations will look back and not use kind words to describe the trash that was government in SA who have ensured SA is put in the same predicament as America due to sheer corruption and incompetence by every single ANC representative over the years.
