Oh My Goodness; all these people in here complaining with your so-called MATHS about the “unreasonable” prices of the Gautrain tickets? I can see the education system is completely failing us as a country. Do you realise that the most valuable commodity to man is TIME.
So what if the Guatrain is not for you, then you can sit in traffic and put more wear and tear on your car, pollute the world even more , suffer from high blood pressure and possible heart attacks due to traffic congestion. Then the idiots that use “I can smoke in my car” as an excuse, good do that smoke and die young we don’t need people like you.
If the Gautrain can only help the hundreds of thousands of people that drive from Pretoria to Johannesburg every day, then that is a win in my book. In what world do you live in that petrol from Pretoria to Johannesburg does not cost you R3000 per month at least? Added to that wear and tear to your car, and hours wasted on the N1. Time you could be using to better your logic and math by reading a book. So Mr Smarty Pants (that is all the dummies making negative comments) let us do the maths.
For this example I am going to take the most expensive options possible.
Gautrein ticket (non-discount) - R47 x 2 = R94; Parking for the day = R10; Travel Time ( ½ hour x2) = 1 hour = R50 (assuming you get paid R50 an hour only as an average) Petrol + wear and tear to station = R20.
Total for Gautrein = R174 per day (seems like a lot?). I am not using the Airport tariffs here, because let’s face it who really travels to the airport every single day. If you do get off at Rhodesfield and take one of the dedicated transport options to the Airport.
Now if you do the same trip with a car at the moment and be honest 90% of the people that make that trip everyday do it alone in their own car.
Let’s say the trip is 60Km (again a “guestimate” for an average). Let us also assume that with the added traffic and stop start you get a very good 10km to a litre. We work on the AA rate of vehicle operating cost for a car that costs (R100k – R125k doing 15000Km/year) = R3/km
Travel Time (90mins x 2 = 3hours) = R150 Wear and tear and petrol (60 x 3 x 2) = R360
Total = R510 (that I think is enough).
Just to make it clear to the people with limited education. R174 is less than R510. That is without taking into account the time you now have to be more productive, educate yourself or just relax so that you can be more productive at the office. That also does not include the extra money spent one medical expenses, or the millions lost and spent on the Road Accident fund because of all the accidents, the millions lost every time thousands of people cannot get to work on time because of an over turned truck blocking all lanes or even more important the added time you have to spend with your FAMILY and friends. Building relationships.
Not having a ticked off father or mother get home and ignore their children because of built up road rage that gets taken out on innocent children. Open your mind for a moment and think beyond your limited scope and to the greater good, to quote Sheldon Cooper “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”
Don’t even get me started on the idiots that claim this to be a money making scheme by the ANC, as much as I hate those silly money hungry fat cats, for once they actually implemented something that will benefit the country.
Gauteng is the economical heart beat of the country. Improving the stability and availability of reliable transport to Gauteng means better productivity. Money saved on transport means that other sectors of the country can now get a better cash input and investments.
Yes this is not for everyone but, if you currently use other means of transport that is cheaper, then the Gautrain is not for you. Remember just because it is not an advantage for you, does not mean that it is not an advantage to others. It is like me (A MAN) complaining about the unavailability of super size tampons in my area? I mean really apply some logic to your thinking before wanting to make comments.
