If anything, our last few years of democracy should have taught us that quick fixes very seldom fix anything.
What we should be looking towards is not only how to "win" now but rather how to leave a lasting legacy, how to ensure that as a country we dominate, in this case in football, for years to come.
The World Cup was a chance, an opportunity to prosper the country in terms of football.
But what have we done? We have thrown millions of rands away at a quick fix, in a coach that did not worked out.
Where is the development? By now there should have been a football pitch on every street corner, new youth leagues, an international standard football academy. Something, anything that will outlast this world cup.
Instead, we will be left with a few impressive (very) stadiums but the football itself will not have changed. After the World Cup, in terms of football, what will we have gained?
I am by no means an administrator, but I would have suggested something very different in terms of coaching our national team.
First off don't offer a coach millions of rand a month, which is absurd. I would look for a local coach with experience and potential to teach. Offer him the position but include in his contract that post-2010 he is to head up a local South African academy to take the experiences gained through the build up of 2010 and pass it on to the next generation of coaches, trainers and players.
And put it a performance-based contract with a no-performance out clause.
Then train him! Pay him thousands a month and use the rest to allow him, or SAFA to approach international coaches and clubs for input. Similarly to what Jake White did during his tenure with rugby.
Imagine if SAFA could have secured three or four two-week training sessions with intentional clubs like Manchester United or an AC Milan or Barcelona, can you imagine what the mood amongst the players would be.
Contract international coaches, for short periods to point out our short coming so that we can correct them, learn from them and not hide them. Search out the best defensive, midfield and striker coaches and managers locally and internationally and bring them in and let's learn from them what we can.
Learn from the best, so that we can pass this knowledge on to our future players and coaches. Ensure that post-2010, South Africa can become a permanent fixture at all world cups.
