Spiting the Springbok

19 November 2008, 11:01

Brandon Faber, News24 User

I know it's unusual to be subjected to my mindless ranting twice a week - but I just have one more question for you before I hand myself over to the men in white suits.

"Why should the Springbok emblem be moved to the right of the jersey to make way for the Protea on the left - but it's okay for Bafana-Bafana to put our national flower on the right, in favour of the SA Football Association logo on the left?"

Any takers? Any clear answers that will not spiral down the usual abyss of misery, misunderstanding and racial insult?

I didn't think so.

Pop around to your nearest sports apparel store if you don't believe me, or simply go here for a photograph of the latest Bafana jersey.

Yebo yes, 'tis the truth as I've told it. Now I am all for the greater accommodation of the King Protea, even if its sole purpose is to get the Watson family to take hands full of Prozac and chill in the corner. But I am even more in favour of fair play.

"What's good for the goose" and so on, don't you agree? Equality and all that. Lovely concepts we bandy about under the rainbow... when it's to our advantage, of course.

Anyway, I hope that some or other person in power - and of some backbone - has the balls to press Mike "the emblem is mine" Stofile on this issue. If the left-hand-side is the flavour du jour for the national sports emblem then it must go on the left of the Bafana-Bafana jersey too. Period.

No exceptions Captain Mike - that is mos fair and will I, in a magnanimous show of solidarity and faith in the fairness of South African politics, go and purchase both jerseys the soonest they are available with the King Protea in its rightful place.

While we are on the subject I think it imperative that we immediately investigate the apparel design of other sporting codes too.

I am willing to bet three nonsensical racial insults and a drive-by-shooting that not everybody is toeing the line. When last have we taken a good long look at the National underwater aerobics squad's outfits? What about polo, chess, karate and the like? Hell, I think this warrants a full investigation of everything - including jukskei and bokdrol-spitting.

Bokdrol-spitting (by the way) is when you take some animal dung (often Kudu), roll it around in your mouth and see who can spit it the furthest. Apparently the sport is big at some festivals around the country... there is even a World Championship held each year.

Anyway, I must admit that I don't care much for bokdrol-spitting. As long as the country's leading "spitter" does it wearing something that sports the Protea on the heart, I am a happy man.

Ecstatic even.
