The right thing to do?

26 November 2008, 11:54

Ginger, News24 User

Is it just me or is the television getting worse by the week? I pay my TV licence, but I am wondering what for. I don't like soap operas and I don't like a lot of the second and third grade rubbish we get from America.

That doesn't leave much worth watching - sport and Strictly Come Dancing about sum most of it up. Now and again you get a really good series that comes on, but is it worth the licence fee?

Quite honestly I prefer to watch DVDs because at least then if I am watching rubbish it is my own fault. I watched Rocky and Bullwinkle again the other day - a totally cheesy movie where the bad guys want to make RBTV (really bad television) so they can turn the nation into mindless zombies.

Well I guess SABC completed their evil plan. Surely there are enough brilliant minds in South Africa to be able to make more decent home grown shows? And surely America has some better grade stuff for sale? What about more stuff for family viewing and more stuff suitable for children on Saturday mornings and during school holidays?

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to have had exam revision stuff on during exam season for high school children. And what about the fun game shows we once had? Where have they all gone? And where is the half hour to an hour pleasant evening entertainment that didn't contain bad attitude and bad language.

Enough of this so called Reality TV already. I don't pay my licence to hear Americans whine for an hour each night. Can we please have something where everyone has not slept with everyone else in the cast, where we don't have to listen to see how many times the f-word can be used in one sentence and where they haven't had to use twenty bottles of tomato sauce/fake blood just for the opening scene alone.

Surely there is such thing as positive TV? Stuff to help people make things, create things, grow things, improve their lives. Movies that make you want to be a better person. Series that show how to make other people's lives better (OK we've had a couple good Americans ones but maybe a couple of SA ones would be even better).

Equal coverage

Also, can't this home shopping stuff and long boring commercials get it's own channel? Nothing annoys me more than an insurance or diet advert that goes on for half an hour while we get endless of examples of how happy people are with the product - whoopee doo - congrats to them - now get off our screens.

And while we are on the subject of separate channels, give the politicians their own one then they can be allocated fair amounts of TV and also stay off the entertainment channels and stop claiming they don't have equal coverage.

Watching Malema change feet when he opens his mouth might be just as entertaining to some South Africans as watching whining Americans who just want to vote each other off.

At least the viewers will still get to watch endless whining and complaining about everyone else. Those of us who would rather not can watch another channel.

Though, I have to say, at least my family are not glued to the TV every night which means we get to spend quality time with each other. So I can thank the SABC for that.
