The current estimated population of the world stands at around seven billion people - more than it ever has been in the history of the world. People are being born at such a ferocious rate that the United Nations estimates that the world's population will total about 15 billion by the year 2100.
In the United Kingdom alone, the Daily Mail published an article with findings that the population of that country grows at around 500 000 every year - a figure which equals the city of Bloemfontein.
According to population expert, Roger Martin, the earth is pushing on a dangerous new era with the current rate of population growth. Other experts warn that the earth's resources are too few to sustain this trend.
As it stands today, there is too much famine, disease and displacement in the world's poorest areas. The rainforests and natural habitats on Earth are already being ploughed and destroyed to a point where the current population is pushing natural resources to an irreparable limit.
How can we feed the future populations of the earth if we cannot do so in 2011?
Advances in the medical field and longer life-spans are said to be the main contributing factors as to why this upward trend is increasing at this rate.
It has been suggested by university professors that governments of the world impose population controls to curb the increasing birth rate. China, already, has been implementing its own form of birth control for many years now.
To put it bluntly, people cannot produce babies without there being consequences. Every additional mouth to feed divides what's available by more and more.
In a simple model, if we take 100 units and divide it by 2, then those 2 people each get 50 units. If the same 100 units are divided by 50 people, they each get 2 units.
Population control is soon to become a major topic of discussion at international affairs meetings, along with global warming and the world's economic problems.
As the issue is sensitive and control of the human population is intricate, governments will have to approach the topic with great care to find a solution.
