'We have failed you, Lucky'

19 October 2007, 11:18

Aiden Sookdin, News24 User

The hearts of millions of South Africans are filled with pain, anger and sadness today. Lucky Dube was shot and killed in an attempted hijacking on Thursday night.

Lucky was a true legend of South African music. His dedication to peace, love and freedom rang true in the lyrics that magically resonated to millions across the world. If you have had the privilege of listening to his harmony, you would have been open to the elements to an eclectic sound, exposing you to political, deeply personal and social issues.

Lucky saw through the discrimination and problems we have in this country. He had the ability to take these issues and turn them into hypnotic beats that reverberated magnificence through the sounds of reggae.

Lucky is a brother of the same musical genius as Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and his excellent spirit will be remembered in my heart for many years to come. Songs like Prisoner, Trinity and The Way It Is, shaped reggae music globally. His music rang through the townships and homes in South Africa bringing with it emotions of freedom, peace and love.

His passion was set free on the wings of angels and his voice was crafted by the hand of God.
His beats and rhythm are created from the feet that walk the streets of Zion.
His love and passion is shaped by the blood of the people in South Africa.
He was rhythm, he was peace, he was Africa.
A gift to his mother
A gift to his blood
A gift to Africa
A gift to the World

Lucky's movement and rhythm is beating in my heart as I write this and the record that will hammer in my heart today is Think About The Children. This is relevant today as we need to remember the family of this legend.

Peace, love and freedom to Lucky Dube and his blood on this sad day. Your music has taken me to new highs and your passion has been planted in the hearts of many. Your family will be mourning your loss and that will be shared by the masses.

Thank you for your music, thank you for your peace, thank you for you Rastafarian movement that liberated and motivated the young blood in this land. Your blood has been spilled by the people you freed with your brilliance.

We have failed you brother, we have lost the fight. The war will continue, peacefully, lovingly and willingly.
