Jacob Zuma had a lot to say on Mbeki and HIV/Aids during an interview with CNN and reported by The Times.
Zuma said former president Thabo Mbeki had his "personal views" on HIV and Aids, and that it was not government policy to question HIV and Aids in Mbeki's time.
"[Former] president Mbeki had his views, it was not ANC policy, it was not government policy either," Zuma said in the interview.
Zuma also took a swipe at former health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, saying she also acted outside government policy by promoting onions and beetroot as immune-system strengtheners for people infected by the HI virus. - The Times.
Well done to our brave president for putting the record straight. It would help though if he could explain a few things to those of us who do not have a good grasp of the intricate governing issues in an entity as complex as the ruling alliance.
Perhaps the president can explain how it is possible to recall and redeploy president Mbeki for creating a nuisance and sowing division in the party, yet, when he was the driving force in the thinly veiled extermination of hundreds of thousands of HIV/Aids sufferers, this moral alliance and its moral upstanding leaders, could not stop him.
There are of course those that will argue that the killing of HIV/Aids sufferers was not an immediate threat to the leadership of the alliance whilst the persecution of the Zuma on the other hand, was a very real threat.
As we all know, a few deaths of a few faceless people is a mere irritation when dealing with the well-being of the ANC, an entity so great, it takes precedence over everything else in the known universe, and its important leaders.
There is perhaps one other matter our righteous president can explain. Manto, despite her complicity in the deaths of over 300 000, is still in parliament, she is also the UA's Honorary Ambassador and Champion of Woman and Children Rights, a position, I am certain, the president arranged in person.
Despite the havoc she wreaked on the country, Manto remains a valued member of the ruling elite with no sign that she will be driven out of the ANC and the government.
Until today, despite her deeds and the belated acknowledgement of evil she personifies, the taxpayer - is still paying for her keep whilst Zuma and his party still pander to her wishes. For her sins she received no more than a slap on the wrist.
Just this weekend it was reported that the ANC expelled a dead comrade, Zolani Xego, for fraud and all manner of misdeeds. This shows the power of a party can reach beyond the grave if it is needed.
This must be a clear indication that Mbeki and Manto were not beyond the reach of the party and its leaders.
