The DA under Helen Zille is a mighty desperate party. It has no patience to wait until pigs fly before it can become the ruling party in South Africa.
It wants power here and now.
Driven by this desperation for power, Zille has gobbled the One-Woman party of Patricia de Lille. For her pains, de Lille has been made mayor of Cape Town.
COPE survived the ignominy of being swallowed up by the DA big fish because of uncertainties about its leadership and its being run from the courts of the land. Up to this day it remains unclear who the real leader of COPE is.
For the forthcoming election, Zille is contemplating a coalition of opposition parties to take on the Jacob Zuma tsunami that is the ANC. It appears that leaders of the opposition, safe one or two, are salivating at the prospects of landing mayoral posts like de Lille.
Opposition parties however need to be warned that Zille devours the tadpoles of opposition parties - the NNP and ID are living testomony to how the opposition disappears down the DA gullet.
The most recent case is of the "former" big fish, Nosima Balindlela who broke her COPE back-bench silence to embrace the DA. If Lekota/Shilowa is not careful, they'll walk into DA laager denuded of all membership.
The opposition is forewarned, be fore-armed.
