"My criminal record left me jobless" - a reply to Dion Ford

06 October 2017, 09:35

Dion, I have empathy for you as I have this disability. I was able to stay gainfully employed and have a retirement. I decline to answer the questions on the applications for employment. If you say that you have no record that can be interpreted as criminal fraud in South Africa. In other countries if a criminal record is detected after you're hired, it is grounds to fire you.

Some jobs are very sensitive and require a criminal records check. For example, doctors, lawyers, bank workers, government jobs including police, financial directors of companies, etc.

A lot of other humble jobs do not involve a background check for a criminal record.

I got a big surprise two days ago when I saw that a California city was recruiting new police officers. They would accept applicants as a police officer with a criminal record if the criminal record was old and not serious.

Speak to a lawyer who specialises in labour law. Don't give up!!!!
