Johannesburg - After more than 50 years of denial, the ANC and the South African Communist Party have admitted for the first time that Nelson Mandela was indeed part of the SACP’s central committee.

For years historians and academics have suggested that Mandela was linked to the SACP. This was always denied, reported the Sunday Times.

However, in a statement issued to the press on the passing away of Mandela, the SACP said that at the time of his arrest in August 1962, Mandela was not only a member of the then underground SACP but also a member of the party’s central committee.

Mandela himself always denied links to the party, including during the Rivonia trial in 1963.  Much evidence pointing towards his affiliation has emerged over the years but the allegations have never – until now - been confirmed officially.
