Tanzania tightens security
17/05/2003 11:55 - (SA)
Dar Es Salaam - Tanzanian civil aviation authorities said on Saturday that the country has beefed up security at major airports and other entry points to counter against any possible attacks.
"We are on security alert and we are going to leave no stone unturned," Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) Director General Prosper Tesha told AFP.
Tesha was reacting to reports of a fresh warning issued by Britain to its nationals planning to travel to six other eastern African countries: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Tesha said security was always tight at major airports and other entry points, but latest developments in Kenya has forced Tanzania Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA), police and other national security organs to tighten security even more at Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport in the country's northern tourist hub.
Travel agents and other operators in the tourist industry described the move as a blow to the country's economy.
"We are going to lose many tourists this time because the tourism boom season is just around the corner," a Tanzania Society of Travel Agents (TASOTA) official said.
TASOTA chairman Mustapha Khataw said the government must act fast and avert further crisis in the industry.
