11/06/2003 11:36 - (SA)
Algiers - A van belonging to four Swiss tourists kidnapped by an armed group in the Algerian Sahara has been found at Oued Samen north of Illizi, 1 500km southeast of Algiers, a security official said late on Tuesday.
The red Toyota van had been booby-trapped and a guide and his driver who found it on Sunday were seriously injured, the source said.
The vehicle was found by Tuaregs who have been helping the Algerian army in its hunt for 15 European hostages still being held in the region. Four motor cycles and a jeep belonging to the group had also been found, the daily El Watan reported.
Fifteen Europeans - 10 Germans, four Swiss and a Dutchman - are believed to be held in an isolated location near the border with Libya.
They disappeared after setting off for tours in the Algerian Sahara between mid-February and mid-March.
Seventeen other European tourists - 10 Austrians, six Germans and a Swede - also disappeared, but were rescued by Algerian security forces on May 13. - Sapa-AFP
