  • Monrovia - President Charles Taylor's son Chucky is in Liberia and not in South Africa as reported last week, he told AFP on Monday.

Charles Taylor jun told an AFP journalist that he had not left for South Africa and denied intending to seek exile there.

"I'm an American citizen. It is not because I'm the president's son that I'm not a normal and quiet person," he told AFP, adding that the reports about his fleeing to South Africa were "everywhere in America and they are ruining my reputation".

In South Africa, Home Affairs spokesperson Leslie Mashokwe had told AFP on Wednesday evening that no application for asylum had been received from Chucky Taylor.

"I therefore can't confirm he is in the country," he said.

President Taylor is facing his worst challenge in a four-year rebel war and has agreed to take up an asylum offer in Nigeria.
