Obasanjo vows to fight corruption
19/07/2003 14:49 - (SA)
Abuja - Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday prodded his new cabinet members to take an active role in fighting corruption - or face being sacked.
Speaking at a retreat for his new ministers - named after Obasanjo was re-elected in April for another four years - the president also blasted his former government for its failures on the issue.
"The former ministers were responsible for the dismal impact of government's anti-corruption campaign in the last four years," he said.
"They shied away from the crusade as they hardly spoke about it in public. When I inquired, they said they must look at themselves properly before they could make up their minds on whether to fight corruption or not."
The oil-rich yet impoverished African country - with the largest population on the continent - has been rated as the second most- corrupt nation in the world by Transparency International.
Obsanjo exhorted his new cabinet to do more than "give a nod to the crusade" or face being sacked.
"You must talk about it or leave. You all must be apostles of the anti-corruption crusade and you must set good examples," Obasanjo said. - Sapa-DPA
