Berlin - A German woman held hostage for months with 14 other European tourists by Algerian Islamic extremists in the Sahara desert died a few weeks ago of "heat stroke," German public television network ARD reported on Tuesday.
Relatives of the woman, a mother of two children, were notifed by the German foreign ministry earlier on Tuesday. The hostage-takers are believed to have buried her body in the desert, according to the report.
ARD added that German authorities believe the group of hostages is currently being held in Mali and cited sources as saying that attempts to have them released were in a "dynamic" phase.
