Kenya: Al-Qaeda files found
11/08/2003 15:57 - (SA)
Mombasa - Police on Monday discovered al-Qaeda training manuals in a house used by a terrorism suspect who blew himself near a Mombasa police station this month, killing an officer, a senior security official said.
"A hand grenade and al-Qaeda terrorist training manuals and materials were recovered this morning inside a house believed to have been used by the late suspect," Coast Provincial Commissioner Cyrus Maina told AFP.
"But we have not made arrests because the police, who were acting on a tip-off from members of the public, found no one in there," said Maina, who chairs the province's security committee.
Maina said that the suspect could have operated from the house and communicated to unknown people while planning extremist activities, "but further investigations are on to unravel the entire mystery."
Kenyan Feisal Ali, 21, blew himself up and killed a policeman with a grenade as he resisted arrest near Mombasa's Central Police Station on August 1.
"Several suspects had been arrested following the incident and a crackdown by a special unit of the anti-terrorism police is underway to bring his associates to justice," Maina added.
