05/10/2003 21:07 - (SA)
Goree - African bishops called on Sunday for Africans to recognise their role in the slave trade and ask for forgiveness.
"Black people must also ask forgiveness for having contributed to the expansion of slavery.
It is known that Africans helped capture slaves," Father Patrice Coly of Dakar sayd.
Meeting on the island of Goree, which for three centuries was an important centre in the slave trade, the 150 African bishops participating in the Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (Secam) called for "asking Africa to forgive Africa", said Coly.
On Saturday one document presented at the pan-African association of Catholic bishops' conferences called slavery of Africans "one of the most odious acts in human history, for the scale of the human damage it caused by the mentality and behavior it allowed," adding that the role of Africans must also be included.
