Horn border demarcation off
30/10/2003 19:04  - (SA)

  • Peace process 'under stress'
  • Eritrea denies 'terrorists'
  • Ethiopian bid to redraw border
  • Eritrea, Ethiopia's border spat
  • Concern for Ethiopia, Eritrea
  • Asmara - The commission responsible for physically marking out the border over which Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a brutal war between 1998 and 2000 has delayed the crucial process indefinitely, the United Nations announced on Thursday.

After two earlier delays, the demarcation process had been scheduled to start in October.

"Under the current circumstances the EEBC (the boundary commission) is unable to proceed with activities as envisaged... but is ready and willing to proceed as soon as conditions permit," said an EEBC statement read out to journalists by the spokeswoman for the UN mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Addis Ababa has refused to cooperate in the demarcation process, having rejected the commission's ruling that the disputed flashpoint border town of Badme was in Eritrea.
