WFP cuts food to Horn
20/02/2004 20:12 - (SA)
Addis Ababa - The World Food Programme announced Friday that it has been forced to reduce by 30% food rations to some 126 000 refugees from Eritrea, Somalia and Southern Sudan due to lack of funding.
The food aid organisation of the UN said in a statement that it urgently required $10m to avoid further cuts in food rations.
It said the WFP has received only 40% of the funds required to feed the refugees and it will run out of food in May if further donations are not made immediately.
"The imminent cut in food rations will put at the risk the health and lives of refugees, specially women and children, said George Shaver, WFP country director in Ethiopia. - Sapa-dpa
