  • Addis Ababa - A reconnaissance mission led by the African Union has been sent to the troubled region of Darfur in western Sudan to assess conditions for a ceasefire commission.

The AU said on Saturday the mission, which travelled from Addis Ababa to Darfur on FRiday, was expected to last nine days.

It was expected to consult with the Sudanese government and the two rebel movements in Darfur, the Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (SLA/M) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), as well as with United Nations agencies and NGOs.

The establishment of a ceasefire commission was provided for in the humanitarian ceasefire agreement on the Darfur conflict signed last month in Chad.

The mission consists of civilian and military staff from the AU cmmission and a representative from the Chadian mediation team, as well as representatives from the UN, the European Union, the United States and France. - Sapa-dpa
