Cape town - Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will chair the African Union's Peace and Security Council meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 4, her department said on Monday.

South Africa is one of the five countries on the continent elected to serve a three-year term on the 15-member Security Council, a statement said.

Other members include Nigeria, Algeria, Ethiopia, and Gabon, while Lesotho, Mozambique, Cameroon, Congo, Kenya, Sudan, Libya, Ghana, Senegal and Togo would serve two year terms.

The council would discuss and make recommendations to the Summit of Heads of State and Government - from July 6 to 8 - on a number of issues, including Darfur in the Sudan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Ivory Coast.

The council would also discuss recommendations for the implementation of the African Standby Force and early warning and response system of the AU.

As current chair of the AU Peace and Security Council, President Thabo Mbeki, would present the council's recommendations to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, the department said.
