Tripoli - Forty migrants trying to reach Italy on small unseaworthy vessels have been rescued by the Libyan coast guard after hitting trouble in the middle of the Mediterranean, security sources here said on Tuesday.
"The coast guard rescued the clandestine migrants on the high seas, to the west of Tripoli", said one source at the national security ministry, adding the people were of African or Arab origin.
The coast guard provided medical aid and then "handed them in to competent authorities who will decide on their case", the source said.
They said another group of illegal migrants in trouble had been rescued last week from Libyan waters about 60km west of Tripoli. Four adults and an infant drowned, but 19 others were saved, the sources said.
