Zanzibar: No minis in Ramadan
14/10/2004 11:19 - (SA)
Zanzibar - Authorities in the semi-autonomous Tanzanian island of Zanzibar on Wednesday banned tourists from wearing miniskirts and eating or drinking in public during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
"As from this weekend, tourists will not be allowed to move around in Zanzibar streets wearing miniskirts or any other dress that can make one look half-naked in public," Zanzibar Tourism Commission chairman Issa Ahmed Othman said.
"It is prohibited to eat or drink in public," during the day, Othman said, explaining that tourist hotels will be exempt from these restrictions.
Anybody found violating the temporary ban, which is become an annual tradition, would be penalised, he added.
About 98% of Zanzibar's residents are Muslim.
