Lusaka - The European Union has given Zambia a grant of €70m (about R550m) to help this poor country meet the costs of maintaining the road network, an official said.
The funds will go towards maintaining the roads in all the 72 districts of Zambia, finance minister Ngandu Magande said.
"The money will be used for the periodic maintenance of truck, main and district roads in the country," Magande said.
He said his government has established a National Road Development Fund, which will be responsible for spneding the money.
Most of the roads in Zambia have been completely destroyed due to lack of regular maintenance, especially in rural areas.
