Blasts shake Nigerian armoury
24/02/2005 13:30 - (SA)
Lagos - A series of explosions tore through an armoury in a military
barracks in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna, damaging
buildings and causing an unspecified number of injuries, state
radio reported on Thursday.
Radio Nigeria said the first blasts were heard about 18:00 local time on Wednesday and continued for another two hours, sparking panic in the city.
Kaduna state governor Ahmed Makarfi later made a radio and
television broadcast saying there had been an unspecified number of
injuries, but that no deaths were reported, Radio Nigeria said.
Makarfi was reported as saying that emergency workers have
evacuated people out of the range of the blasts. There was no
immediate word on what caused the explosions at the Dalet military
barracks on the outskirts of Kaduna.
More than 1 000 people died in Nigeria's biggest city of Lagos
in January 2002 when an ammunitions dump in the Ikeja military
barracks erupted in massive explosions, firing missiles into the
city of more than 12 million.
