Lagos - Nigeria's food and drug safety agency Nafdac said on Monday it had blacklisted 11 Indian and one Pakistani firm for allegedly supplying fake and counterfeit drugs.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control said in a statement that "the notorious foreign companies persistently indulge in dumping fake and counterfeit drugs into the country".
"Several security reports and detailed investigations by Nafdac have definitely indicted and confirmed the deep involvement of the companies in the fake and counterfeit drug business," said the statement.
The Indian companies are: Kamala Overseas Bombay, Vardhman Export A-188 TTC, Unibios Lab, Shreechem Pharmaceuticals, Merit Organics, Milan Laboratories, Mission Pharmaceutical, Henkish Chemical, Intermed 4GK, Wardex Pharm and Dew Healthcare, it said.
The Pakistani firm is Pliva Pakistan.
The agency banned all importers from bringing products from these companies into Nigeria and warned that drugs and products from the affected firms will be seized and destroyed, the statement said.
Nafdac said last year that more than 70% of fake and adulterated drugs circulating in Nigeria come from Asia, especially India and Pakistan.
