Explosion kills 2 in Somalia
28/03/2005 13:16 - (SA)
Mogadishu - Two children were killed and one injured on Monday when an object they were playing with exploded in the Somali capital, hospital officials said.
"The two dead children were buried immediately while the injured one was treated in Medina Hospital," a medical officer in the hospital told AFP.
The incident occurred in Waharoade neighbourhood of Mogadishu's southern Huriwa district.
Relatives could not say whether the explosive that detonated was a grenade left behind in recent fighting between the rival clans or unexploded ordnance abandoned by gunmen who have been clashing in the area for several years.
"It could have been a bomb or any other gadget left behind by the warring sides," said Abdullahi Mohamed, a relative.
Interclan fighting has flared regularly in the shattered Horn of Africa nation since the ouster of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991 split the vast desert country of some 10 million people into a patchwork of fiefdoms governed by unruly warlords.
A transitional government created last year is still based in the Kenyan capital Nairobi due to widespread insecurity in Mogadishu.
