  • Madrid - Spanish police intercepted a boat carrying 52 North Africans trying to reach Spain illegally on Tuesday, news reports said.

The dinghy-type boat carrying 47 men, two women and three children, was discovered about 24km from the coast near the southern town of Velez-Malaga, Spanish National Radio said.

Several had to be treated for hypothermia.

The migrants were to be held in custody while they were identified before being sent back to their countries of origin.

Hundreds of Africans seeking a better life in Europe try to reach Spain weekly by crossing the Strait of Gibraltar packed into small boats. Many are caught, but officials estimate thousands manage to slip through each year. Thousands more drown while making the crossing. - AP
