Maputo - Mozambican President Armando Guebuza said on Thursday up to nine million children would be vaccinated this year against polio and measles, saying good health was vital in combating poverty.
"This campaign aims at a healthy population and is part of the drive to fight poverty," Guebuza said.
He said the drive would target "nearly nine million children aged up to 14 years or roughly 45% of the total population of 18 million".
Health minister Ivo Garrido said the campaign would be held in three stages in July, August and September.
"The country does not have the capacity to hold a national campaign like this simultaneously," Garrido said.
