  • Lagos - A Nigerian court granted bail to 10 suspected human traffickers on Monday, almost two months after more than 50 children were found imprisoned in a shipping container, said their lawyer.

The magistrate's court in Yaba, central Lagos, granted the 12 bail in exchange for 400 000 naira (about R18 200)), said Hyeladzira Ganjuwa.

The court postponed the case until May 26, he said.

More more than 60 people, including 52 children aged between one and 14 years, were rescued by police on March 5 in Lagos as they were being transported by a truck towing a container normally used for frozen fish.

West African children are often taken or bought from their families and sent to work in foreign mines or plantations. Some are sold into prostitution, and some are killed or tortured in black magic rituals.

Child trafficking attracts at least 10 years' imprisonment in Nigeria. Police said some of the children could be used as prosecution witnesses in the case.
