  • Windhoek - Women's rights groups in Namibia have been campaigning for better conditions for sex workers in the country, reports namibian.com.

A former parliamentarian has called on sex workers to organise themselves or to join women's organisations, reports the namibian.com.

The co-ordinator of Women's Solidarity Namibia, Rosa Namises, said this would enable prostitutes to have regular health checks to prevent the spread of HIV-Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases.

"Either do the right thing or stop it," she said.

Speaking at a public hearing on sex workers in Windhoek, Namises recommended that the Immorality Act of 1996 be reviewed.

She said there were no laws regulating sex workers in the country.

Namises said Women's Solidarity Namibia was ready to create a friendly environment for sex workers.
