  • Johannesburg - Short tempers and typographical errors caused much amusement at the closing session of the Pan African Parliament's fourth ordinary session in Midrand on Friday.

MP Miria Matembe drew giggles when she got up to reprimand a colleague who raised an issue already discussed in his absence.

The male MP complained that a motion on the collection of dues from African Union member states, was never adopted.

"The member was not in the house when it happened," Matembe stated sternly.

"If he was not in the house, he should not now draw out the affairs of the house."

But Matembe was left red-faced when she too was reproached for raising a matter discussed in her absence.

She questioned the absence of a name from a list of new committee members.

"Where were you (when this was discussed)?" one MP asked Matembe - to much laughter.

"You discussed it?" a surprised Matembe asked.

"Yes, and you were not here," came the response.

A typing error on a recommendation for the creation of an African university also had MPs in stitches.

One member asked for the removal of a superfluous "s" from a point reading: "co-operating with regional and international educational research institutions so as to benefit from aids given by these institutions".

"Yes, aid - not Aids," a member called out, much to the amusement of his colleagues.
