  • Pretoria - President Thabo Mbeki leaves for Liberia on Monday to attend the inauguration of Africa's first female head of state, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Mbeki will be joined by Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who will arrive in Monrovia after a visit to the Ivory Coast, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.

Congratulating Johnson Sirleaf on her election victory on November 24 2005, Mbeki said: "Your election is indeed a victory not only for Liberian women in particular but also represents a beacon of hope for women in Africa and the world in general."

Mbeki was expected to return to South Africa on Monday.
