Madrid - Thirty-two African refugees drowned during an attempt to reach Spain's Canary Islands after their boat cantered off the coast of Mauritania, said reports on Sunday.
The report said that 25 people in the boat were rescued by a Mauritanian cutter and taken to hospital in the country's capital, Nouakchott.
The boat, carrying refugees from Senegal, Mali and Gambia, had departed from the port city of Nouadhibou and left 17 days ago, but apparently drifted off course and sank.
For the past months, hundreds of Africans had drowned in their attempt to reach the islands.
The Spanish coast watch was searching for a boat that was said to be carrying up to 500 Africans trying to reach Spanish territory.
According to reports, Spanish air force planes, about 200km south of the island of Hierro, had sited the fishing boat.
