Ex-Malawian president arrested

Blantyre - Former Malawian President Bakili Muluzi was arrested on Thursday on corruption charges, said his spokesperson.
Sam Mpasu said: "I can confirm the arrest. We have just arrived at the Anti-Corruption Bureau offices ... They have told us that the arrest is in connection with the bank account in Zomba (Malawi's former capital city)."
Mpasu said Muluzi was arrested at his home in Blantyre, Malawi's commercial capital, and faced six corruption charges in connection with allegations that he diverted large sums of government money into his personal bank account.
Muluzi had denied the accusations.
The arrest made Muluzi the most prominent victim of an anti-corruption drive launched by his successor, President Bingu wa Mutharika, who had targeted a number of senior members of Muluzi's circle since taking office in the southern African country in 2004.
