Goma - One soldier was killed and at least two others were wounded in an attack in the volatile east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, said the United Nations and the DRC army on Saturday.
The attack was attributed to rebels or army deserters.
"One soldier was killed and two more injured in a suspected FDLR attack on Thursday night," said major Ajay Dalal, UN mission spokesperson for Nord-Kivu province.
He was referring to rebels from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda.
The mainly Hutu rebel group, based in the eastern DRC for 12 years, is suspected of playing a role in the 1994 genocide of Tutsis in neighbouring Rwanda.
The genocide claimed the lives of 800 000 people from the minority Tutsi ethnic group.
The DRC armed forces confirmed the latest incident. Army colonel Mayanga Wakishuba, whose brigade is based in the region, attributed the killing to "demobilised soldiers and deserters".
In a separate incident, a truck driver was killed by unidentified men in Rutobogo, about 25km west of Goma, said the UN mission on Saturday.
