  • Abuja - A medical doctor was among six people arrested by police in Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria on Saturday for allegedly selling new-born babies.

Commissioner of police in Maiduguri, Mohammed Abubakar, said police suspected that the five others, who are employed by the doctor, were his accomplices in the scheme.

He said the doctor - the proprietor of a maternity home - and his employees were arrested after a tip-off from a young woman who had delivered a baby boy on Friday night.

The police commissioner said the doctor had allegedly sold the baby for $230 (about R1 650) to a woman on Saturday. The Maiduguri orphanage had earlier denied the woman permission to adopt.

Abubakar said the doctor obtained the babies he sold by habouring young women who approached him to abort unwanted pregnancies.

"He would take care of the young women until they were ready to be delivered of their babies," said Abubakar.

"Soon after the delivery, the doctor declares the babies dead and pays a token to the mother, who incidentally did not want the baby in the first instance."

But he said the doctor's luck ran out on Saturday, when he delivered the baby of a woman who wanted to keep it.
