Madrid - At least 4 000 illegal Senegalese immigrants who arrived at Spain's Canary Islands have been flown home in the past month, Spain's state secretary for foreign affairs has announced.
State secretary Bernardino Leon said that roughly 15 planeloads of immigrants had been leaving weekly for Senegal since mid-September, after Madrid and Dakar struck a repatriation agreement.
Senegalese police appeared to have arrived at another figure, saying that some 2 798 illegal immigrants had been repatriated as of October 11.
More than 27 200 illegal African immigrants had landed on the Canary Islands since the beginning of the year - nearly triple the record number of arrivals in 2002.
