  • Lusaka - Medical doctors who are treating Zambia's ex-president Frederick Chiluba are considering carrying out a heart transplant following the deterioration of his cardiac problem, his aide announced on Saturday.

"The doctors have informed us that Chiluba's cardiac illness is serious to the point where heart transplantation is now under consideration," Mwamba said.

Mwamba said the former president may have to find other means of travelling to South Africa for his cardiac treatment after government refused to finance his trip saying his condition can be treated locally.

Chiluba, who is facing several charges of corruption and theft of public funds, has since written to President Levy Mwanawasa asking him to intervene in his problems.

"He has personally written to the president to express his displeasure over the manner his health is being handled," Mwamba said.

The magistrate's court that is trying Chiluba ordered that he should be allowed to travel for his treatment and that he was not fit to stand trial due to his illness.

However, the Zambian government has asked the court to review its decision on Chiluba because local doctors could still treat him without being flown to South Africa.

The case will now be held on Monday, Mwamba said.
