Spain kicks out illegals
21/01/2007 23:18 - (SA)
Saint-Louis - About 450 African would-be immigrants were due in Senegal on Sunday after being expelled from Spain which they had entered illegally.
"In total 448 people who had emigrated illegally to Spain" will be taken to Saint Louis (in northern Senegal) by the end of the day, commander Alexis Correa, a member of the national committee for managing the repatriated and displaced, said.
Three planes carrying more than 200 people had already landed at Saint Louis airport in northern Senegal by midday, an AFP journalist at the scene said.
They were mostly from Senegal, but also Mali, the Ivory Coast, Mauritania and Guinea.
Correa said the return had been organised at the request of the Spanish authorities.
"It is a one-off operation which ends today (Sunday)," he said.
Senegal is a key source of illegal migrants to Spain.
Madrid and Dakar agreed in October on setting up legal migration plans to clampdown on an unprecedented wave of illegal African immigrants to the Spanish Canary Islands, many making the trip on ramshackle boats.
